Lions Bay garbage and recycling collection switches to GFL

Waste Control made its last curbside pickup on September 25. Schedules stay the same for now, but single-family homes get new wheeled totes in the spring.

Lions Bay has a new garbage, organics and recycling contractor. The Village of Lions Bay said in its September 25 Village Update that Waste Control made its final curbside pickup that day, and that GFL takes over the service the following week.

The Village says collection schedules and requirements are not changing for now. Residents should put containers out as usual and report missed or late pickups directly to GFL at 604-892-5604.

New bins, in stages

  • Multi-family and institutional properties, including multi-family homes, the school and the café, had their bins exchanged on September 28 and 29. GFL containers replaced Waste Control’s red bins.
  • Single-family homes keep their current containers for now. According to the Village’s October 2 update, their wheeled bins are expected in the spring.
  • Tote sizes: the 240 L tote holds about six household garbage bags and the 120 L about three. The Village says the 120 L has a footprint close to a standard bin, so most people should be able to store it in the same place, out of reach of wildlife.

Organics, soft plastics and the depot

The Village says extra yard-waste pickups will be added in the higher-volume spring and summer months, with frequency set once those months arrive. Kraft bags or liftable bins are fine for extra material, up to 50 lb per container, and plastic bags are not allowed.

Curbside pickup of flexible plastics in pink bins has not started. Staff are working with Recycle BC to add it. Until then, soft plastics, foam, small metals, small electronics, batteries and light bulbs go to the community recycling depot at the Works Yard, 5 Tidewater Way. It’s open Fridays from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

What’s next

The Village is answering residents’ questions in each weekly update and says it will set up chances to see the new totes in person. Questions go to the Director of Operations at [email protected]. Updates are posted on the Village Update page.
